The New York Yankees season has been a rollercoaster -- so far. Before the 2025 MLB season even began, they lost their ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole to a season-ending injury. And now, they are currently battling to stay in the American League playoff race without their superstar, perennial MVP candidate, Aaron Judge.

Judge landed on the injured list earlier in the week due to a right flexor strain. And with the MLB trade deadline simultaneously approaching, the Yankees roster remains in flux, as new faces continue to be brought in to put on pinstripes.

One of those new faces played the part of hero on Wednesday, at the conclusion of one of the more wild Yankees games of the year. The Yankees came away with a 5-4 victory, in 11 innings, over the Tampa Bay Rays, making wild MLB history in the process.

According to @OptaStats on X, the Yankees became the first team in the modern era (1901), to enter the eighth inning, ninth inning, and tenth inning with a deficit, and then win the game in the eleventh inning.

The Yankees entered the eighth inning with a 1-0 deficit. Trent Grisham hit a solo home run, and Giancarlo Stanton hit an RBI single, giving them a 2-1 lead.

They entered the ninth inning with a 3-2 deficit, and Anthony Volpe hit a game-tying, solo home run, sending the game to extra innings.

Then they entered the tenth inning with a 4-3 deficit before Cody Bellinger hit an RBI triple, forcing an eleventh inning.

And with no outs, runners on second and third base, one of the newest Yankees, Ryan McMahon, came through in the clutch. He sent a ball deep to centerfield, which went into the books officially as a walk-off single, scoring Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The Yankees have now won back-to-back games against the Rays, and find themselves just four games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.
