The New York Yankees are at the top of the AL Wild Card food chain, but they have a shortstop problem. Anthony Volpe is not only slashing just .216/.285/.409 over 106 games, but he also leads baseball with 15 errors.

The 24-year-old totaled 16 errors across 160 games last season and 17 errors over 157 contests in 2023, when he won the Gold Glove Award as a rookie. New York selected him No. 30 overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, but his production has not matched that positioning after a promising start to his career.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked if he's considered benching Volpe ahead of Wednesday's bout with the Tampa Bay Rays, via SNY.

"I have not wanted to do that or decided to do that," he said. "Clearly, he's gone through some struggles here, and has not made some plays in some key moments. I think Anthony's super tough, and I think he's wired for this."

"My message to him is 'You're really good at this.' And that's reality. He's a Gold Glove player...he's a playmaker out there," he continued. "He's made some mistakes on some balls that he needs to nail down, but it happens to guys at different points in their careers. I feel like his mental toughness and his wiring will get him through this...I believe his best days are in front of him this year and beyond."

However, many Yankees fans on social media aren't buying what Boone is selling.

"Bro Boone is going to keep putting him out there regardless, if he’s the best shortstop or even the worst, he doesn’t care," one said. "The front office isn’t going to do nothing about Volpe being bad."

"Said a whole bunch of nothing," another one said.

"You said this last year. And the year before," another said. "U can say it again next year, too, Boone.

"Fire this clown," another said.

"Hilarious. I think Boone needs bifocals," another said.

Volpe went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Rays, but he also had two errors. The 5-foot-10-inch, 197-pounder now has 15 homers and 57 RBI this season.

Right-handed pitcher Will Warren (6-5, 4.82 ERA) will start for New York against Tampa Bay right-hander Zack Littell (8-8, 3.72 ERA) on Wednesday.
