Orlando Pirates remain at the top of the Betway Premiership table after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Soweto giants had a frustrating first half as they created numerous scoring opportunities, but failed to convert as Lindokuhle Mathebula was equal to the task in the home team's goal.

Pirates made their intentions clear in the second stanza as newly crowned Betway Premiership Player of the Month, Relebohile Mofokeng broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute.

The tie, however, was far from over with Rise and Shine striking four minutes from time courtesy of Bonginkosi Dlamini to set up a nervy ending.

Patrick Maswangayi emerged as the hero for Abdeslam Ouaddou's men, restoring the lead in the 90th minute to ensure his team tightens the grip on the top spot.

Pirates are level on 44 points with defending champions and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, but have a superior goal difference.
