Ahead of Thursday's MLB Trade Deadline, plenty of teams around the league are expected to be active one way or another. One of those teams includes the Boston Red Sox, who are aiming to make a second-half push.
With a 58-51 record, they are five games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East lead and just one game behind the New York Yankees for second place. Additionally, they are 0.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the second AL Wild Card spot.
One specific player Boston has been linked to is Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara as they look for a reliable No. 2 starter behind Garrett Crochet. On Wednesday, a new update regarding a possible trade that would send Alcantara to the Red Sox surfaced.
As one of the bottom teams in the NL, a postseason appearance is unlikely for Miami this year, making Alcantara a legitimate trade candidate. However, as it stands, it seems likely that the 29-year-old will not make his way to Boston (h/t Sean McAdam of MassLive).
"As recently as 10 days ago, when the Red Sox called to inquire about Alcantara’s availability, the message they seemed to be saying, according to someone with knowledge of the talks, was: 'Don’t move him without checking back with us.' But since then, there’s been little contact between the Marlins and Red Sox. That could stem from the high asking price for either pitcher, which according to a source, 'starts with two elite prospects… plus,'" McAdam wrote.
Though a lot can change until the trade deadline passes, it seems that a trade to acquire Alcantara is probably not in the cards for the Red Sox. Still, their activity will be worth monitoring as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
