TGL founders Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy must be pleased with Wyndham Clark’s latest comments.
Clark was part of The Bay Golf Club team that squandered a 6-3 lead to lose 9-6 to Jupiter Links on Tuesday.
Jupiter‘s victory also meant they replaced The Bay in the fourth and final playoff spot at the end of the regular season.
TGL has received a lot of criticism since its inception last year, but Clark’s reaction spoke volumes about the competition.
Wyndham Clark’s comments after TGL defeat speak volumes
TGL’s entertaining vibe gives the impression that the players are more interested in having fun than winning matches.
However, Clark admitted after The Bay’s 9-6 defeat to Woods’ Jupiter Links that he was gutted to let the victory slip.
“It sucks right now,” he said. “We were walking in, and we were like, ‘I don’t know how we just lost.’
“They did everything they could. Tom Kim made three huge putts and then obviously a hole-in-one. So I feel like they did a lot of amazing stuff, and we did a lot of good stuff, and it sucks.
“I have a long flight home to Arizona, and I’m sure once I land from that, I’ll be over it. But it hurts because I feel like we should have won that match.”
Clark’s pain suggests that the players are not only participating in TGL to have a laugh with their friends while hitting some balls.
It might not be as prestigious as a major championship, or even a PGA Tour event, but winning the TGL trophy matters.
The league must still find ways to improve, but the players’ display of real emotion about winning and losing is a huge feat.
They must now find a way to make fans feel the same passion for their chosen TGL teams as they would for the NFL or NBA.
Min Woo Lee expresses ‘love’ for TGL despite loss
Clark’s teammate, Min Woo Lee, also reflected on The Bay’s disappointing defeat on Tuesday night.
His admission of feeling “nervous” before the match adds to the growing sense of TGL’s importance among the players.
“Yeah, slowly just got better. I love playing here. It’s fun. Yeah, I was nervous today, and I got to show some good shots, which is nice, especially putting-wise.”
The attention now turns to the four teams (Boston Common, Los Angeles, Atlanta Drive and Jupiter Links) in the postseason.
While McIlroy has his own aspirations of winning the TGL title with Boston, he and Woods will be hoping for more fierce competition from all angles.
