Sunday was one of the most magical days in recent Ohio State hoops memory. Not only did the women’s team decimate then-No. 15 Michigan State in East Lansing, but the men, barely clinging to the last scrap of March Madness hope, essentially dominated then-No. 8 Purdue from start to finish.
Now, the women are set to start their postseason in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, and the men have two regular-season games remaining against sub-.500 teams in the Big Ten. If Jake Diebler’s team wins out, they are almost assuredly going dancing.
So, for this week’s fan survey, we have two questions — one for each team — about your post-season seeding predictions. Check out the questions below, and then make sure to vote in the survey beneath the article. If none of the options included in the survey line up with what you want to pick, feel free to head down to the comments at the bottom of the page and write in your pick. Then, later this week, check back with LGHL to see the results.
Question 1: Will the Ohio State men make the NCAA Basketball Tournament?
The Buckeyes (18-11, 10-8) are set to play Penn State in Happy Valley on Wednesday (12-17, 3-15) and Indiana (17-12, 8-10) to close out the season at the Schott on Saturday. Those are both not only winable games, those are both games that OSU should win. It wasn’t that long ago, following Ohio State’s embarrassing loss to Iowa, when all hope seemed lost for the Buckeyes, not just in regard to their postseason chances, but to the future of the program and to any optimism surrounding Diebler’s tenure as head coach.
However, having a relatively healthy team play its best game of the season against a top-10 team in a must-win game can do a whole heck of a lot to turn things around. So, for me, I have them in, regardless of what happens in the B1G Tournament. If you look back over the years, dating back to Chris Holtmann’s time in Columbus, the Buckeyes have tended to struggle in January, but turn it on toward the end of February and even make runs in March. Hell, that’s why Diebler is their head coach now.
So, perhaps I am a glutton for punishment, but I am riding with this team to finally break its March Madness streak and to get back to the NCAA Tournament.
Question 2: What will the Ohio State women’s seed be in the NCAA Basketball Tournament?
There is no such drama surrounding the OSU women’s chances of making their NCAA Tournament. However, while the Buckeyes are currently No. 11 in the country, they are the No. 5 seed in the B1G Tourney, meaning that they did not get the benefit of the double-bye and will play a game on Thursday night with the top-four seeds waiting to play until Friday.
So, I want to know where you think they will be seeded on Selection Sunday. I didn’t give you the option to vote for anything lower than 8, because that’s never going to happen, and to be fair, I don’t think there’s really a chance for them to fall before the 4-line, but I do want to give you some options.
However, I do think that they have the chance to move up a few spots. Seven of the top-19 teams in the country are in the Big Ten, so if Kevin McGuff’s squad were to run off four-straight wins and take home the conference title (and its automatic bid), they could add four more Quad-1 wins to their resume, perhaps moving them up to a No. 2 seed.
Throughout the year, we ask questions of the most plugged-in Ohio State fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
