Waverly and Watkins Glen girls basketball fall in Section IV semifinals

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Local high school basketball is one step closer to the section finals.

Waverly and Watkins Glen girls basketball saw their season’s end, on Tuesday. Following a quarterfinal upset of Owego, 5th seeded Waverly fell short of a Class A championship game appearance. Top-seeded Maine-Endwell overpowered the Wolverines with a 69-47 semifinal victory.

In Class B, Watkins Glen was bested by the defending Section IV champions Chenango Forks 59-40. Oregon State commit Maggie Warpus led the Blue Devils with a game-high 25 points, punching her team’s ticket back to the title game. Rachel Vickio led the Lake Hawks with 12 points, backed by 10 from Michaela Wheaton, and 9 from Olivia King.

In Section V, Canisteo-Greenwood punched championship game tickets in boys and girls hoops. The Charger boys bested CG Finney 54-40, in the Class B2 semifinals to advance to Friday’s title game. C-G will play Bishop Kearney or East Rochester for the crown at Blue Cross Arena.

On the girls side, the 4th seeded Chargers took down top-seed Letchworth 46-36 in the Class C1 semifinal. C-G will meet Bloomfield in Saturday’s title game, held at Finger Lakes Community College at noon. In Class D, 5th seed Elba stunned #1 Avoca-Prattsburgh 55-43 in the semifinal round.
