IS THE CRITICISM OF GLEN SATHER AS RANGERS MANAGER JUSTIFIED? The Maven Responds: Sather ran the Blueshirts from 2000 through 2015. He committed some colossal blunders such as naming Islanders icon Bryan Trottier the Rangers coach in 2002. Trots was quickly canned and replaced by Sather. It was, without a doubt one of the darkest moments in club history.

By contrast – as Jess Rubenstein points out – one of Slats' best moves was hiring Tom Renney as head coach. During the 2004 lockout, Renney rebuilt the entire organization by adding more scouts and skill coaches such as goalie guru Benny Allaire who turned Henrik Lundqvist into an ace.

Perhaps worst of all was Sather's negative persona. Author George Grimm puts it well when he writes, "Ranger fans might have cut Sather a little more slack had he not come off as such an arrogant person. After all, Frank Boucher and Emile Francis were here almost as long as Sather and both failed to win Cups as GMs, yet they are both beloved figures in Rangers history.

"Glen was very lucky in Edmonton to have Wayne Gretzky dumped in his lap, but once he got to New York he soon discovered that it wasn't easy to build a winning team around Nedved and Fleury as it was with Gretzky and Messier."
