Mavericks unlikely to land 12-time All-Star amid free agency rumors

Chris Paul has other plans this summer.

The Dallas Mavericks are preparing for a deep playoff run in the 2025-26 campaign, though they may miss out on signing a decorated veteran point guard this summer.

The club recently signed D’Angelo Russell to a two-year deal. He's set to fill in for Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and isn't expected to return until at least January.

Despite rumors linking Chris Paul to Dallas, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the 12-time All-Star is not interested in joining the Mavericks.

“Sources add that Paul, who started all 82 games last season for San Antonio, has rebuffed interest from Dallas and Charlotte thus far in free agency in a nod to the family plan,” Stein wrote.

Paul has also reportedly drawn interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers, but he's currently expected to sign with a team closer to his family in California. That effectively rules out Milwaukee — unless the Bucks can sway him with an expanded role after waiving Damian Lillard, who is set to miss most, if not all, of next season due to a torn left Achilles tendon sustained in the postseason.

Entering his 21st season, Paul is still seeking his first NBA championship. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him join a contending team for what could be his final year in the league.

The 40-year-old remained impactful in the 2024-25 campaign, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals across 28.0 minutes per game with the Spurs.
