The Sun Devils closed strong in 2024 with 11 wins and a team that kept finding ways to win. With a loaded roster returning, the pressure is on to turn that spark into something bigger.
Arizona State didn’t just close strong last season. They flipped a switch.
The Sun Devils won 11 games in 2024, including six one-score thrillers, and surged down the stretch with one of the hottest finishes in the country. It wasn’t always clean, but it was undeniable. That late-season wave has fans and analysts wondering if Kenny Dillingham’s team is the real deal and are built to take the next step.
The numbers say it won’t be easy. ESPN's Billy Connelly still isn’t fully sold on the Sun Devils as he has them projected to win about 8 games this season. Citing his Big 12 preview not knowing if they are the real deal or not. "It's hard to know what to do with a late-season surge. ASU was solid for about two-thirds of the season and outstanding for one-third.”
As it’s fair to expect some regression after so many close wins. Running back Cam Skattebo, the team’s tone-setter in critical moments, is gone. But outside of that, the core is not only back, it's gotten deeper.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt enters 2025 with a stronger group of receivers. Jordyn Tyson returns alongside breakout playmaker Malik McClain, Fresno State transfer Jalen Moss, and two high-upside additions in Noble Johnson from Clemson and Jaren Hamilton from Alabama. The offensive line is experienced. The defense is packed with seniors. And most importantly, the Sun Devils know who they are.
Now playing in a Big 12 that’s wide open. With no true powerhouse and plenty of change across the conference, Arizona State has a real shot to crash some early favorites chances. If the offense clicks early and the defense picks up where it left off, they could be in the mix for more than just a strong finish.
The expanded College Football Playoff makes room for late bloomers. But it also demands consistency. Dillingham’s group can’t wait until November to flip the switch again. The schedule won’t allow it.
Arizona State lit the spark last season. This year is about proving they can set the whole thing on fire.
