Astros considering strong pursuit of Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez

The Houston Astros considering strong pursuit of Arizona Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez.

The Houston Astros are looking to make a deadline splash based on recent reporting. But, it's trending towards not the position they've been linked to for some time. Instead, they are pursuing a third baseman amid Issac Paredes' injury.

One of the third basemen the team is pursuing is Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez. Like many of the top contenders, the Astros are vying for one of the best sluggers on the market.

But, according to a new report from Francys Romero of Beisbolfr.com, the Astros' pursuit of Suarez might be seeing an increased amount of push before trade deadline day.

"The Astros continue to see Eugenio Suarez as a potential trade target and may increase their pursuit in the coming hours, per industry sources." Romero writes. "Arizona's asking price for Suarez has remained high."

If the Astros do increase their offer for Suarez and make a strong push for the Diamondbacks slugger, it's a clear sign of two major talking points for Houston.

The first is that the Astros are going for a World Series in 2025, believing in the roster, and are willing to spend strong assets to make it happen. The other point is that Paredes's injury is potentially season-ending.

Suarez is a rental and would allow Paredes to return to the third base spot next season without issue. But, for 2025, the Astros need to find a new third baseman, and Suarez is the best option on the market.

He was an All-Star for the second time in his big league career, and at 34 years old, is having one of his best seasons of his career. His .898 OPS would be the second highest of his career, and his 36 home runs are already the second most he's had in a season.

Only his 2019, when he hit 49 home runs and had a .930 OPS, is better than his season so far. Adding a player like Suarez to the Astros' offense would be a huge boost. He's one of the game's best sluggers and leads all of baseball in RBIs with 87.

This report from Romero suggests that the Astros aren't just interested in landing Suarez, but they're trying to make a push to land him ahead of the trade deadline.

Houston needs to fill the void at third base, and Suarez would be a great way to do it. Even though he's expensive, the Astros are making a strong push to bring the veteran slugger to Houston ahead of the trade deadline.
