Former Colorado standout Travis Hunter has a new nickname. He chose it for himself.

At Jaguars training camp this week a light moment quickly made national waves when Travis Hunter sat down with NFL Senior Insider Pete Prisco. Asked to pick a nickname, he didn’t hesitate: “It’s the Unicorn. Yessir, it’s the Unicorn.”

The do-it-all star, known for playing both cornerback and wide receiver at Colorado under Deion Sanders, made the declaration during his first NFL camp with Jacksonville Jaguars. It fits the billing. Hunter is one of the rare rookies being evaluated for a legitimate two-way role at the pro level, something that’s taboo in today’s league.

Travis Hunter wanted a nickname. He gave himself one that fits, it’s a statement. The NFL has no example of a true, full-time two-way star since his own college coach himself Deion Sanders and he has surely given his protege some guidance in transitioning to the league and playing both sides of the ball.

During an interview Hunter leaned into the moment, calling himself “The Unicorn” as the nickname quickly caught attention with fans, and for good reason. ‘

Now with his recently dubbed nickname all eyes will be on Hunter to live up to the name and the world is not watching.
