Viktor Hovland heads into the final round of the WM Phoenix Open just four shots off the pace, well within striking distance of a potential win.
His decision to play at TPC Scottsdale may have raised eyebrows, especially given his past struggles at this course. Still, he is putting together a solid tournament.
Hovland sits tied for 11th place after carding an impressive 65 on Saturday. This has him on track for his best finish in the event by some margin.
There was one part of Hovland’s game that stood out more than any other during the third round.
Viktor Hovland reflects on putter change after strong day on the greens in Phoenix
Data Golf reported that Hovland led the field with 3.91 strokes gained putting, with only Akshay Bhatia surpassing the three strokes gained mark.
After his round, the 28-year-old Norwegian discussed a recent adjustment to his equipment that appears to be paying dividends.
“Yeah, definitely made a lot of putts today. Made a grip change on my putter. Not how I hold it, but the actual grip itself. I feel way more stability over the ball and my speed control has been really good this week,” he stated.
“So, yes, it’s awesome. I need to putt well with the way I’m hitting it off the tee. It’s nice.”
Viktor Hovland’s first-time achievement at TPC Scottsdale this week
This marks the fourth time Hovland has played in the WM Phoenix Open, with his last appearance coming in 2023. But before this year, he’d never posted a round under 70 at TPC Scottsdale.
He missed the cut in both 2020 and 2022, but this week has been different. He opened with a 69 on Thursday and followed it up with an impressive 65 on Saturday.
And while there are plenty of players still in contention, another round like Saturday’s would give him every chance to stay right in it down the stretch.
