The Steelers could be getting Rodgers back for another season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had about as good of a season as they could have hoped when they signed Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2025 campaign. They won the AFC North for the first time since 2020, and while it didn’t end the way they would have liked in the postseason, the team and their quarterback exceeded the expectations of many.
Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns to just seven interceptions in 16 games. He had stated shortly after signing with Pittsburgh that he intended on 2025 being his final season in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. However, Rodgers was noncommittal about retiring when asked about it near the end of the season. While we don’t yet know what Rodgers will decide to do, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reveals that it is looking more and more likely that Rodgers will be back in Pittsburgh in 2026.
“My understanding is that the odds are increasing,” Pelissero said. “I am told Rodgers has spoken several times with new Steelers coach Mike McCarthy, who, of course, helped Rodgers develop into a four-time MVP and a Super Bowl winner in Green Bay. Rodgers has also spoken with receiver DK Metcalf, who wants Rodgers back at age 42. The plan is for Rodgers to take a little bit more time, and everyone hopes [he] comes to a decision prior to the start of free agency in mid-March.”
Mason Rudolph and Will Howard are the only two other quarterbacks under contract for the Steelers. Considering that teammates have raved both publicly and privately about Rodgers, and made it known they also want him back, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Rodgers decides to return for one more season.
