The St. Louis Cardinals are still exploring a trade that involves Nolan Arenado and the Houston Astros.
The St. Louis Cardinals have revealed that they are going to be a team that's selling players this MLB trade deadline. With multiple top players in the organization that are on expiring contracts, they are ready to use those players as assets to add new help.
While the Cardinals seek other teams interested, they've come back to exploring a trade that could send Nolan Arenado to the Houston Astros.
"Nolan Arenado’s name has come up in trade talks between the Astros and Cardinals, but there’s no momentum toward a deal as of this morning," MLB insider Jon Morosi took to X on Tuesday morning.
It's a somewhat questionable move by the Cardinals, as a similar deal was previously discussed but never finalized due to Arenado's no-trade clause in his contract. The veteran third baseman is still owed $52 million through the 2027 season in his deal he signed before getting traded to St. Louis in 2021.
You can't blame the Astros, though. After Houston's current third baseman, Isaac Paredes, went down with a hamstring strain on July 19, it looks like his injury could be worse than what was anticipated. Paredes is getting second opinions on the injury, but he could possibly miss the rest of the 2025 season.
However, Arenado's perspective on a move to Houston could change. The Astros hold the lead in the AL West, while the Cardinals continue to fight to stay in playoff contention in the National League. St. Louis is 3.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the last Wild Card spot.
