Bayern Munich have had some absolute magicians don the number 10 jersey. The latest being the wiz kid Jamal Musiala. In his maiden season donning the number, Musiala is living his dream representing the German giants playing a prominent role as they compete for the elite trophies of the sport.
The dream that pushes him on
Musiala’s feelings regarding inheriting the number 10 jersey at a very young age was captured in Säbener 51, the official members’ magazine for FC Bayern Munich. “It’s always been my dream to play with the number 10 at FC Bayern. I feel the new pressure and responsibility, but it also gives me an extra push,” expressed Musiala(via @iMiaSanMia) on his new chapter with Bayern, shouldering the most responsibility he ever has so far.
Specially mentored by the previous owner of the number 10 jersey, Leroy Sané, Musiala grew more into the version we know thanks to the able guidance from some excellent and very friendly seniors in the team. Naturally, carrying that mission on after their departure from the club has a very personal connection beyond the obligations for the club and the fans.
Earning glorious purpose after a promising start
Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Mehmet Scholl, Roy Makaay, Arjen Robben to name a few of the stalwarts in the club’s history have donned the number 10 before Musiala. Recalling the history behind the jersey and what that means to him, Musiala said, “When you see what the number 10 means, there’s an enormous responsibility behind it. I got the number because I’ve delivered and performed over the years.”
Ever since moving to Munich as a young 16-year-old from Chelsea, the Moose managed to surprise and impress at every opportunity available. Making his debut at 17 and 18 years for Bayern and Germany respectively, Musiala has since scored 72 goals and provided 46 assists for club and country.
Carving Bayern legacy in his own style
From the recent past, the image of Arjen Robben cutting inside and scoring goals repeatedly with surgical precision will stay etched not just in the club’s history but in footballing history. Followed by the blistering pace of Leroy Sané coupled with his ability to create chances or score with powerful shots has left certain expectations from what a player wearing the Bayern number 10 does.
However, the Moose desires to carve his own image and not be influenced from the achievements or the playstyles of his former counterparts. Despite the shadow of such historic heavyweights that inevitably tails the jersey, Musiala is keen on leaving his own stamp on it. “I play the way I play. I won’t change my style because of the number 10” he said.
Jamal Musiala has shown incredible spirit and resilience to bounce back from a horrendous injury in the summer. Here is wishing him lots of luck and success with his teammates at Bayern and that the small pause remains just a pause in an otherwise incredible footballing journey. Good Luck Musiala!
