Schaub last played in the NFL in 2020, being a backup QB for the Atlanta Falcons. A few years after retiring, the 44-year-old was a football analyst for Atlanta, but only remained in that role for a year. If hired with Arizona, it would be his first NFL coaching opportunity.

Cardinals interested in Schaub for QB coach:

Schaub has a connection to LaFleur, as the Cardinals coach was an offensive assistant for the Falcons in 2016. The duo only shared one year together, and Schaub was a backup at that point, but connections tend to last forever in the NFL.

Arizona has quite a quarterback controversy, with the likely scenario being it trading seven-year starter Kyler Murray in the offseason. The new QB coach would have to either get up to speed with last year’s starter Jacoby Brissett or be paired up with a rookie from the 2026 draft.

Despite lacking coaching experience, Schaub is an elite source of information. The former third-round pick was a backup for the first three seasons of his career, but once he arrived with the Houston Texans in 2007, he became one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the league.

In 2009, he earned his first Pro Bowl appearance by leading the league in competitions, pass attempts and passing yards. Three years later, he got his second Pro Bowl selection after leading the Texans to a 12-4 record and throwing for over 4000 yards.

Schaub has been a young backup, a starter, a Pro Bowler and a old backup. His experience through all the levels that a NFL quarterback has to handle could make him the perfect job for whoever starts under center for the Cardinals.
