He spent the last three season as defensive coordinator in Cleveland.
BEREA, Ohio (WKBN) – Jim Schwartz has officially resigned as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns, according to reports.
The team released the following statement on Friday morning:
“Yesterday, Jim Schwartz submitted his letter of resignation as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. We’d like to thank Jim for his contributions to our organization over the last three seasons. Our search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately.”
According to reports, the 59-year old was upset at being passed for for the head coaching position in favor of Todd Monken.
Schwartz was named the 2023 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year after his first season as Browns defensive coordinator.
Cleveland ended the 2025 regular season once again toward the top of the league, allowing the fourth-fewest total yards per game at 283.6 yards and third-fewest passing yards per game at 167.2 yards. They also finished third in the league with 53 sacks and set the franchise record for sacks by a Browns team in a season.
Schwartz previously was the head coach of the Detroit Lions for five years, posting a record of 29-51. In 2011, he led them to a record of 10-6 and the team’s first postseason berth since 1999.
He initially broke into the NFL as a college/pro scout with the Browns from 1993-1995.
Schwartz’s 29 years of experience coaching in the NFL include 17 seasons as a defensive coordinator, previously serving as defensive coordinator with the Titans (2001-2008), Bills (2014) and Eagles (2016-2020).
He also helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LII.
