Roma and Francesco Totti are in talks for a reunion, seven years after his tumultuous departure from their front office. The ownership has changed since then, and the parties are on good terms, although his return hasn’t materialized so far despite being rumored more than a few times.

Senior consultant Claudio Ranieri gave credence to the chatter in an interview to Sky.

“The Friedkin family is considering it, and I wish he could be really useful to the club, because he’s part of it.”

According to Corriere dello Sport, Totti attended the recent UEFA Europa League clash between Roma and Stuttgart, returning to the Stadio Olimpico after two years. He was personally invited by the governors.

The American tycoons are interested, and Ranieri could serve as the liaison to make it happen. All share the common goal of bringing the Giallorossi to the highest level possible, domestically and in Europe.

On the other hand, they’ll have to find the right role. In previous remarks, the legend expressed his desire to be operational and not just a figurehead. They’ll work on it to see whether he could be onboarded ahead of next season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the alternatives are either a position as a sort of supervisor, like the one Paolo Maldini had at Milan, or Marco Di Vaio currently handles at Bologna, or a hybrid between a club ambassador and a technical consultant on key decisions.

Our Take on Roma and Totti

Great players don’t necessarily make great directors, but their expertise surely comes in handy if they’re part of a team with clear tasks. That’s where things fell apart the last time the reunion seemed possible.
