Hosts Italy win in ice hockey before Olympics officially begin

Italy's women won their Olympic ice hockey opener 4-1 against rivals France on Thursday, giving the host nation a boost a day before the Milan/Cortina Winter Games officially begin. The curling and the ice hockey start before the opening ceremony because of the number of group games needed for a tournament.

Italy's women won their Olympic ice hockey opener 4-1 against rivals France on Thursday, giving the host nation a boost a day before the Milan/Cortina Winter Games officially begin.

The curling and the ice hockey start before the opening ceremony because of the number of group games needed for a tournament.

It was 1-1 after the first period but Italy then pulled away at the Milan Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, with Kristin Della Rovere shining with a goal and an assist.

Sweden earlier beat Germany 4-1 in another Group B game.

Finland against Canada was postponed for a week due to a norovirus outbreak among the Finns.
