The prospect of Lionel Messi returning to play for Newell’s Old Boys is gaining serious momentum in Argentina. Internally, the Rosario club is no longer hiding the fact that they are working on a medium-term plan, fully aware of the symbolic and sporting significance such an event would carry.

Speaking to the French outlet L’Équipe, Newell’s vice-president Juan Manuel Medina confirmed this ambition, while urging caution.

"We are working to have Leo play for Newell’s in the first half of 2027," he revealed, acknowledging the magnitude of the project.

"It’s a project that goes beyond Newell’s. It’s a project for the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football. Everything depends on what we can offer in terms of infrastructure and a competitive sporting program," he added,
