KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While the Kansas City Chiefs may not be in the Super Bowl this year, there’s still some local ties.

Mason Richman was a gentle giant at Blue Valley High School. Following a college career at Iowa, he trained to make the NFL.

“It was a very unexpected team, very unexpected, seventh round, but it’s been phenomenal and he’s really embraced it,” Kathy Richman-Wallace said about her son making the NFL.

“Chances are so minute, and for it to all work out and for him to be in the situation he’s in, with Seattle, the organization, you can’t say enough, but here we are. Somehow,” John Richman, Mason’s dad said. “A year ago at this time, we didn’t know if he was going to get drafted or make the team.”

Mason came from a Football family. John played at Nebraska and now he and Kathy got to watch their son not only make the NFL in his rookie year, but be a lineman on the Super Bowl Bound Seattle Seahawks. Mom is elated to show she’s a Seahawks fan to the neighborhood and extremely proud of her son.

“His state of mind is, ‘This is such a great team.’ I think one day he told me, ‘Mom I just love this team so much.’ He’s been so blessed,” Kathy said.

“It’s great to get out there, it’s fun, he lives close to the facility.  He walks to the facility from his condo, it’s pretty convenient,” John said.

They’ve visited him at multiple games, home and away from Seattle. Now, the biggest visit, the Bay Area for the Big Game. Now, it’s just a matter of getting there.

“Well, it’s not free! He’s gets his two complimentary tickets and then we’re negotiating who’s going, and how we’re paying for it and where we’re staying,” Kathy said.

Mason’s fiancé got first dibs. But he’s just one of a few local ties to the Seahawks; Drew Lock and Maryville’s Jalen Sundell are also there. Sundell’s family even opened up their home to Mason’s younger brother Maguire, who plays at Northwest Missouri State. But, the family is ready to head out Friday.

“Bring your fanciest Hawks gear and nothing is too much. It’ll be fun. We’re going to plan some dinners with Mason and enjoy the weekend of 70 degrees,” Kathy said.

They’ll be loud and proud, continuously cheering the same the chant.

Go Hawks! He was an Iowa Hawkeye and we say go Hawks all the time. So it’s kind of cool to be able to say Go Hawks,” Kathy said.
