The German international has been an eye-catching part of a mixed Liverpool side this season
Liverpool demolished Newcastle at home to make it two dominant wins in two on the week, and Florian Wirtz left his mark on the occasion.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, the German international indulged in cliché, though did make explicit that team success allows personal accomplishments to shine brighter:
“I just enjoy it,” he said.
“It’s so easy to say but as long as I can help the team win games, I’m happy.
“Then when you can celebrate your own goals, it’s always the best.”
He also had some kind words to say about the fans, with Anfield bearing witness to both high-scoring displays at the end of January. He’s aware that his relationship with the fans of his new club is only just beginning, and that is reflected in his goals:
“I always felt good here. I enjoy playing in this stadium with these fans.
“Maybe you connect a little bit better, also with the fans, when they can see that you can score or that you are important for the team.
“I’m just happy to play here in front of the fans.”
Given Hugo Ekitiké’s brace to score Liverpool’s first two goals, the German international also had a lot of compliments to share about his French teammate’s skillset:
“I think everyone saw again what quality he has, what a great player he already is,” he said.
“He is so fast, has such a good finish and it’s just a joy to play with him. Not much more to say!”
Ekitiké certainly does seem a wonderful player to give assists to, I’ll give him that.
