Liam Rosenior has just taken his post match press conference after Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal, and as well as many questions about his game plan and setup, he was also asked about two of the key players he left out of the squad tonight.
The word before kick off was that Reece James and Pedro Neto were having their minutes managed. But Rosenior’s story was different – he said they had “knocks” and failed fitness tests tonight.

“Pedro [Neto] and Reece [James] had small knocks,” the manager said.
“They were just in too much pain for tonight. They’re giving everything. They would always put their hand up to play. Reece is an incredible captain and leader. I know Pedro is an outstanding professional and a great player. Estevao.”
Call us cynical, it sounds like he’s been told to rest them and is covering up for his bosses by saying they have knocks. We know this competition isn’t the club’s priority compared to the Premier League and Champions League.
It certainly is fishy there was a different story briefed before the game. In any case, it’s too late now. We wonder if there will be any sign of “pain” this weekend? We have our doubts. They’ll start and be fine.

Rosenior also spoke to the TV cameras at full time. With BeinSport, he tried to find the positives of a game which was ultimately a very disappointing one for Chelsea and their fans.
The approach the manager took to this game – defending deep to start the game then pushing forward later, was pretty controversial, both with fans and pundits. Paul Merson said he was “flabbergasted” by it.
