Injured Patriots LB Robert Spillane offers update on chances of playing in Super Bowl 60

Patriots injured linebacker Robert Spillane provides update on his status for the Super Bowl.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - As of Friday, the Patriots had nine players on the injury report with a “questionable” status for Super Bowl 60.

Perhaps after Drake Maye (shoulder), the player most vital to the team’s success in Sunday’s championship game is Robert Spillane, who re-aggravated a prior ankle injury in the team’s AFC Championship win over the Denver Broncos.

Spillane did not practice all last week, but during Monday’s opening media night, the linebacker said he was “running around” at Stanford, but didn’t practice.

“I’m doing what I need to do,” Spillane said. “We have a plan scheduled for me to return to play. I’m just trying to do everything I can to make sure we’re right on it.”

Spillane has been one of the Patriots’ best free agent signings from this past offseason. He amassed 97 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, and five pass defenses in 13 games.

Along with Milton Williams, he’s been a pivotal defender against the run. The Seahawks run the football as much, if not more, than any team in the NFL.

Kenneth Walker has been dynamite during the playoffs for the Seahawks.

Spillane notched six total tackles in each of the first two playoff games against the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans and had a pair of tackles before exiting the win over the Broncos.

The linebacker indicated his ankle was feeling better every day and was hopeful of his chances to play.

“We’re on the right track,” he said. “We’re where we need to be and the goal is to obviously go out there and be dominant on Sunday.”

Spillane, one of the Patriots captains, likes what he’s seen from the team.

“I think we’re in such a great place where it’s confidence and light airiness,” he said. “We know we’re going to be right where we need to be.”
