Airport girls set Region scoring record, Whiteford wins Tri-County Conference boys basketball showdown.
MILAN – Airport’s girls basketball team seems to enjoy playing in February.
The Jets set a school record on Valentine’s Day of last season by scoring 89 points in a victory over New Boston Huron.
That record was eclipsed during a 103-29 win over Milan on Monday, Feb. 2.
It is the first time a Monroe County Region girls team has reached 100.
The previous best was 99 by Monroe against in a 99-26 win over Taylor Center on Nov. 12, 1980.
St. Mary Catholic Central’s record was 94 and Whiteford had games of 93, 90 and 90.
“We were able to play our style of basketball and everyone contributed something in tonight’s win,” said Airport’s interim coach Luke Baker. “Our team was able to play solid defense and was efficient on offense.”
Sofia Mator led the way with 21 points and Mya Stahr finished with a career-high 20. Olivia Gratz contributed 13 and Katie Roecker and Ella Prush added 9 each.
Jillian Baker and Brityn Duffy were strong on defense as the 13-1 Jets, who exploded for 36 points in the first quarter and had 65 by halftime.
Emily Bladen was the game’s top scorer with 23 points for Milan (0-14).
GIRLS
Flat Rock 53, SMCC 41
FLAT ROCK – “This was one of our strongest defensive performances of the season,” Flat Rock coach Brian Kryk said. “They have a lot of offensive weapons.”
Flat Rock counted those weapons with a balanced attack with Madleen Hussein (19 points), Layla Holbrook (16) and Lily Klein (14) all scoring in double figures.
Klein dominated inside for the 9-5 Rams with 18 rebounds and 3 blocks.
SMCC (8-5) was led by Gracelyn Carter with a season-high 17 points.
Huron 51, Jefferson 33
NEW BOSTON – Elle Huffman scored 19 points with three 3-pointers and 6-for-6 on free throws to pace Huron.
Ava Bossick (16) and Ava Russo (11) also scored in double figures for the 6-6 Chiefs.
“Good win,” said Huron coach Bradd Bossick. “We needed it. Our defense created a lot of offense. We moved the ball well and locked them down on defense.”
Jaelyn Barath scored 15 points for Jefferson (5-10).
Onsted 61, Erie Mason 38
ERIE – Erie Mason stayed close for a half before Onsted pulled away by controlling the second half 33-19.
Zoie Stubleski led the 5-11 Eagles with 13 points.
BOYS
Whiteford 69, Lenawee Christian 61
ADRIAN – Lenawee Christian’s Jackson Salenbien is closing in on 2,000 career points.
Those talents were on display as he poured in 38 points.
But Cole Griffith nearly matched him with a career-high 35 points as earned a key Tri-County Conference victory.
“Cole was an absolute force inside,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin.
Both Whiteford and Lenawee Christian not have two losses in the TCC. LCS is 8-2 and Whiteford 7-2.
“I thought our guys played hard and wanted it more,” Bollin said. “I’m incredibly grateful to have such a great group of competitors.”
Caden Schroyer added 10 points for Whiteford, which improved to 13-3 overall.
Dundee 37, Hillsdale 31
DUNDEE – Dundee got back on track after three straight losses and 11 setbacks in its last 12 games.
“Total team effort tonight,” Dundee coach Larry Middleton said. “Everyone played well in their role. We didn’t turn it over much and we played great defense. Much needed win for Dundee.”
The 5-11 Vikings trailed 9-7 after one quarter, but grabbed a 19-17 lead after the intermission and led 28-22 after three periods.
Mason Ray led the offense with 10 points.
Ida 54, Clinton 27
IDA – Ida bolted out of the gate, outscoring its guests 23-4 in the first period.
The 10-5 Blue Streaks padded the lead with a 15-2 domination of the third period.
Owen Snyder led a balanced attack with 11 points and Gavin Albring and Landen Alberts tossed in 9 apiece.
Ann Arbor Huron 63, Bedford 41
TEMPERANCE – Bedford was blitzed 22-6 in the opening quarter and 39-15 at halftime.
“We couldn’t slow them down in the first quarter,” Bedford coach Nick Brillhart said. “Was proud of the way the team played in the second half, but we need to have that effort for all four quarters.”
It was the sixth consecutive loss for the 6-11 Mules, who were led by Henry Albring with 13 points and Rett Wingate with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.
