The defender’s future has taken a fresh twist.
Barcelona have confirmed that defender Andres Cuenca has extended his contract with the club until 2027 before completing a loan move to Sporting Gijon.
Cuena had been tipped to join Cesc Fabregas’s Como in Italy but is now set to stay in Spain with Borja Jiménez’s LaLiga 2 side.
“FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with player Andrés Cuenca to renew his contract with the Club, which was due to expire on June 30, for another season, until June 30, 2027,” read a club statement.
“Furthermore, FC Barcelona and Sporting de Gijón have reached an agreement for the loan of the 19-year-old defender until June 30, 2026.”
Cuenca will now be hoping he can enjoy some regular minutes at Sporting Gijon in the second half of the season before deciding on what to do next.
Barcelona have already moved to bring in a replacement in defence for Juliano Belletti’s side, signing Juwensly Onstein from KRC Genk on a deal until 2028.
