We may be getting the defender we want, just not at the time we want him.
The winter transfer window is quickly closing and while it looked like there would be more departures from Merseyside than arrivals for a minute, thankfully that hasn’t actually happened. The other side of the coin is that there haven’t been any real meaningful additions to the squad just yet, but that could be changing in these last hours of the window’s opening.
Paul Joyce reported on Sunday that Liverpool have made a deal with Ligue 1 club Rennes for the transfer of Jeremy Jacquet, with the defender being loaned back to the club for the rest of the current season and joining the Reds in the summer. The clubs have allegedly agreed to a £55million plus £5million in add-ons for the transfer, subject to a medical.
This comes on the heels of reports of Liverpool’s interest in a loan deal for Lutsharel Geertruida from Sunderland, but whatever may have happened there had fallen through with Sunderland unable to find a replacement in time.
Liverpool are also allegedly fighting Chelsea for the signature of Jacquet, but Aadam Patel at BBC mentioned that it does not appear they will be able to match Liverpool’s bid. The U21 French international came through the Rennes academy and has made 18 appearances this season, in addition to being part of the French national team system.
Jacquet would surely bolster Liverpool’s defensive woes, with both Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson set to be out of contract this summer. At 20 years old, Jacquet would join our younger squad and the club see him as a long term investment as they do with Giovanni Leoni.
