VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — SDSU and USD entered the weekend in second and third place in the Summit League this season separated by just one game in the standings. The Coyotes defeated the Jackrabbits 73-54 Saturday in their first meeting of the season to force a tie for second place at 7-2 in the league.
It was a two-point game at halftime before the Yotes outscored the Jacks by 17 over the final 20 minutes. South Dakota forced 16 State turnovers and converted them into 27 points.
“Not all of our mistakes were youthful,” SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston said. “We had some experience mistakes, too, but there’s just a lot of players out there that haven’t played in this game. They maybe been on our bench, but they haven’t played. They haven’t experienced something not going well and responding to it.”
The Coyotes were lethal from downtown with 11 3-pointers, highlighted by a 6-for-7 performance from Angelina Robles, while the Jacks hit just 17% from deep.
“It’s one thing to defend and make them take a tough shot,” USD head coach Carrie Eighmey said. “It’s another to finish the possession with the rebound. And I felt like we were able to do that consistently enough, especially in the fourth where they weren’t able to get like a run.”
Both teams are on the road this week with the Jacks at St. Thomas and the Coyotes at Denver.
