Recap all the Big Ten action from Saturday.
The Big Ten had four games on Saturday and all four had NCAA Tournament implications. Fans ended up getting multiple close battles.
Let’s take a look at what happened.
Game of the Night:
–Indiana Hoosiers 98, UCLA Bruins 97 (2OT)
This looked like an even matchup on paper and it certainly played out that way, with the teams battling into double overtime before a winner could be decided. Indiana actually outplayed UCLA for most of the game, but the Bruins had some late game heroics that pushed things into an extra session. Nick Dorn proved to be the difference, with 26 points and seven rebounds. Reed Bailey also had 24 points off the bench.
Indiana improved to 15-7 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play with the win. It continued a recent upward trend for the Hoosiers, who have now won three in a row, including a massive one against Purdue at home on Tuesday. The wins alleviated much of fans’ concern about Selection Sunday, as Indiana is now a safe bet to make the field. The question is whether the Hoosiers can find a way into the upper tier of the league and improve their shot at making the second weekend of the Tournament. That will be decided over the next few weeks.
On the other side, UCLA fell to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in Big Ten play with the loss. It was a disappointing performance on multiple fronts. To start, it snapped UCLA’s three-game winning streak and erased all the momentum the team seemed to be building. Moreover, the game probably wasn’t as close as the final result, even despite the double overtime sessions. That’s because Indiana led handsomely heading into the final minutes, when UCLA started intentionally fouling and the Hoosiers botched closing out the game. Had the Bruins won, it would have mostly been luck.
The Hoosiers will now prepare for USC on the road on Tuesday. The Bruins will try and get back on track against Rutgers at home on Tuesday.
The Rest:
–USC Trojans 78, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 75
The Trojans were solid favorites coming into this game and eventually took care of business, beating an overmatched Rutgers at home on Saturday. Ezra Ausar led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds. Chad Baker-Mazara also had 17 points and five rebounds.
USC improved to 16-6 overall and 5-6 in Big Ten play with the win, while Rutgers fell to 9-13 overall and 2-9 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Trojans will now prepare for Indiana at home on Tuesday. The Scarlet Knights will get UCLA on the road on Tuesday.
–Washington Huskies 76, Northwestern Wildcats 62
Both these teams have been discussed as underrated squads so far this season. However, it was Washington who took care of business, even on the road in Evanston. Hannes Steinbach proved to be the difference with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Zoom Diallo also had 22 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Washington improved to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in Big Ten play with the win, while Northwestern fell to 10-12 overall and 2-9 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Huskies will now prepare for Iowa at home on Wednesday. The Wildcats will try and rebound against Illinois on the road on Wednesday.
–Wisconsin Badgers 92, Ohio State Buckeyes 82
This projected as one of the more interesting games of the weekend, but didn’t really pan out that way, as Wisconsin took control by halftime and never looked back. Ohio State’s offense played decently, but the Buckeyes could never get enough stops to pull off an upset on the road. John Blackwell was particularly impressive in the outing, finishing with 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Nick Boyd also had 21 points.
Wisconsin improved to 16-6 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten play with the win, while Ohio State fell to 14-7 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Badgers will now get most of the week off before facing Indiana on the road on Saturday. Ohio State will get Maryland on the road on Thursday.
