As we head into Gameweek 24, FPL managers are entering a crucial stretch of the season where smart squad management, form players, and fixture planning can make or break overall rank.
This week, I stuck largely with my core players while keeping a close eye on a few underperformers and potential rotation risks.
Gameweek 23 Review
Gameweek 23 delivered a mixed but respectable return for my squad. While a few players rose to the occasion, several real-life match situations, missed chances, tactical battles, and late goals directly limited what could have been a much stronger FPL week.
Goalkeeper
I started Robin Roefs, who returned just 1 point. His low score was less about poor goalkeeping and more about what happened in front of him.
His defense struggled to deal with sustained pressure, eventually conceding after failing to clear their lines during a prolonged spell in their own half.
Once the clean sheet was gone, his ceiling disappeared. Still, his selection remains fixture-based, and he continues to serve as a budget enabler rather than a long-term premium option.
Defence
My backline of Matty Cash, Nathan Collins, and Trevoh Chalobah had a fairly quiet week, shaped largely by how their matches unfolded.
Matty Cash was the standout, returning 6 points. His team played on the front foot, and Cash was constantly overlapping and getting into advanced positions.
While he didn’t register a direct attacking return, his defensive work and attacking involvement paid off, justifying his place once again.
Nathan Collins struggled in a match where his side spent long spells defending deep. Under pressure for much of the game, clean-sheet hopes faded early, and with little opportunity to venture forward, he finished with just 1 point.
Trevoh Chalobah picked up 4 points in a game that demanded defensive discipline. His side limited clear-cut chances for large periods, and although a clean sheet didn’t materialize, Chalobah’s solid positioning and involvement helped him avoid a major points hit.
Overall, defensive returns were modest, but Cash’s contribution helped steady the ship.
Midfield
Midfield was where most of the action and frustration came from in GW23.
Phil Foden blanked again with just 1 point, despite plenty of possession. The match saw City dominate the ball, but the opposition defended deep and crowded central areas, forcing City wide and limiting Foden’s influence in dangerous zones.
Yankuba Minteh also returned 1 point, failing to capitalize on a favorable fixture. His side struggled to build momentum, and he often found himself isolated, with promising transitions breaking down before they could turn into clear chances.
Antoine Semenyo was the clear standout, delivering 8 FPL points. He scored a crucial goal for his side in a tightly contested match, thriving in a high-intensity, end-to-end contest. His direct running, physicality, and willingness to shoot were rewarded once again, underlining his excellent value.
Ryan Gravenberch rounded things off with 1 point. Liverpool didn’t dominate as expected and even lost to Bournemouth with a last-minute goal. Pushed into less advanced areas, he struggled to influence the final third.
Attack
Up front, my forwards delivered steady but unspectacular returns, largely dictated by game state.
Thiago returned just 1 FPL point in GW23. He was largely isolated as his side struggled to control the game, with limited service in dangerous areas. Most of his touches came outside the box, and the few chances that did arrive were low quality,
Hugo Ekitiké returned 1 point after failing to convert his chances. He started from the bench and had few chances, but as his side lost control of midfield, service dried up. One missed opportunity proved costly from an FPL perspective.
Erling Haaland returned 2 points in what was a rare quiet outing. He was heavily marked throughout the game, with defenders doubling up and cutting off central supply. While he still occupied dangerous positions, the service simply wasn’t there for a big haul. There’s no panic here, weeks like this are part of owning Haaland.
Bench Performance
On the bench, David Raya returned 1 point, conceding after sustained pressure and a lapse in defensive concentration.
Marc Guéhi stood out with 6 points, benefiting from a well-organized defensive performance that unfortunately left me with a benching headache.
Bruno Guimarães and Diakité both returned 0 points, as neither of them featured in Gameweek 23.
Gameweek 24 Preview
I made a few substitutions ahead of GW24. I transferred out Phil Foden, Yankuba Minteh, and Nathan Collins, replacing them with Dominik Szoboszlai, Bryan Mbeumo, and Pascal Struijk, respectively.
This decision was influenced by the form of these players and their upcoming fixtures. Have a look at my FPL team for Gameweek 24 below:
