Ter Stegen breaks silence on relationship with Barcelona ahead of surgery

FC Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen is flying to Bordeaux this afternoon, where he will undergo surgery at the Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac on Tuesday.

The operation is for the German international to address his lower back problems that have kept him from training since the start of pre-season and prohibited him from travelling to Asia with the rest of the squad.

Upon his arrival at El Prat Airport, the Barcelona goalkeeper was approached by SPORT and was asked about his relationship with the club.

Recent developments surrounding his injury and his refusal to leave the club have reportedly created tension between the German international and the Blaugrana.

So much so that there have been talks of the Catalans considering stripping him of the club captaincy before the start of the new season.

However, Ter Stegen denied that there are any problems between him and Barcelona.

“The relationship with the club is good, always good, intact,” said the veteran shot-stopper.

When asked about his physical condition and the problem with his back, the veteran goalkeeper replied with a laugh:

“If you have to have surgery, I think there’s something wrong, don’t you?”

Ter Stegen will undergo surgery to address his back issue tomorrow, following which the club are expected to release a statement regarding his recovery timeline.

The German international insisted earlier – even before undergoing surgery – that he could be out for about three months.

However, the medical staff at the club and other experts suggest a longer downtime of about four to five months. If that turns out to be the scenario, Barcelona can utilise his absence to register one of their new signings.
