Summerfield, Whiteford, Erie Mason, Ida boys and SMCC, Jefferson girls earn basketball wins Thursday.
DUNDEE – Gavin Albring was a key part of Ida’s defensive game plan against Dundee.
The plan had to quickly had to be altered.
“Gavin Albring got into foul trouble and Luke Hennessey and Cam Riggs stepped up guarding Luke Bishop,” Ida coach Jared Karner said.
Bishop still scored 12 points to share game-high honors with Albring, but he was shut out in the second and fourth quarters allowing Ida to pull away for a 52-29 victory on Thursday, Jan. 29.
“Cam Riggs has played two great back-to-back games,” Karner said. “His 5 points, 4 assists and 3 blocks were all at times when we needed them.”
Ida got points from 11 players in improving to 9-5.
“Very proud of the entire team tonight,” Karner said. “Everyone contributed when in the game and you can’t ask for more as a coach.”
Dundee dipped to 4-11.
BOYS
Summerfield 54, Lenawee Christian 47
PETERSBURG – Summerfield charged back from a 22-6 deficit in the first quarter as Brody St. John amassed 28 points and 10 rebounds.
“I have been coaching a long time, and this comeback was very unique,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said. “I am very proud of the boys staying the course and coming back possession by possession. Beating LCS and Whiteford in the same week has really given us some confidence moving forward.”
St. John just missed his fourth 30-point game of the season.
“Brody St John was a dude tonight,” Schiffler said.
Easton LaPoint added 9 points for the 10-6 Bulldogs.
Erie Mason 56, Morenci 50
MORENCI – Erie Mason used defense to snap a two-game losing streak.
“After a great start we kind of let up defensively and let them back into the game,” Mason coach Isaac Skaggs said. “Once they hit a few shots you could see their confidence start growing and they started knocking down some tough shots. Fortunately, we were able to hang on down the stretch.”
David Sweeney hit eight free throws and scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Maddix Wise got us started out well with 5 3’s in the first half, Warren Williams gave us a big boost off the bench in the 2nd half, and David Sweeney was excellent in the 4th quarter icing the game at the free throw line. Maddix Wise drilled five 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the 9-7 Eagles.
Whiteford 72, Sand Creek 42
SAND CREEK – Whiteford bounced back impressively from Tuesday’s loss to Summerfield.
“I thought tonight we played very hard,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said. “We pressed from the tip and took an early lead and never looked back.”
Cole Griffith led the way with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Nate Andrews added 10 for the 11-3 Bobcats.
GIRLS
SMCC 49, Riverview 48
RIVERVIEW – St. Mary Catholic Central made an impressive comeback for a road victory.
“We got off to a slow start down 16-2 and once again got down big in the third,” SMCC coach Brian Boberg said. “The girls never gave up and battled back. So proud of their trust and will to fight back tonight.”
Adela Illes led the 8-4 Kestrels with 20 points and Bella LaFountain tossed in 11.
Jefferson 43, Milan 29
NEWPORT – Jefferson’s 1-2 punch of Alivia LeBrun (20) and Jaelyn Barath (15) outscored Milan.
Jefferson improved to 5-9 and Milan dipped to 0-13.
Grosse Ile 46, Huron 42
GROSSE ILE – Brooklyn Burke scored 11 of her career-high 14 points in the first quarter, but Grosse Ile overcame that with 20 points of its own in the opening period.
Elle Huffman also scored 14 for the 5-6 Chiefs.
