The late night television circuit joined the conversation this week after Bill Belichick was passed over for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Jimmy Kimmel took his own shot at the legendary coach’s personal life.
During Wednesday night’s episode of ABC's “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the longtime comedian addressed Donald Trump’s Truth Social post criticizing Hall of Fame voters for excluding Belichick. In a rare moment of agreement, Kimmel sided with Trump on Belichick’s football resume before delivering a punchline that quickly went viral.
“Bill Belichick is a bit of a jerk and a bit of a cheater, but he absolutely should have been voted into the Hall of Fame,” Kimmel said. “The guy has been winning Super Bowls longer than his girlfriend has been alive.”
The joke referenced Belichick’s relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, which has drawn increased attention since last year's interview with CBS Sunday Morning. Hudson interrupted questioning by Tony Dokoupil about how the two met and her involvement in Belichick’s professional affairs. It was later clarified that Hudson’s role was limited to personal matters and assisting with logistics to public relations.
Belichick, 73, failed to receive the required 40 of 50 votes from the Hall’s selection committee, according to an ESPN report. The report cited debate among voters regarding the coach’s involvement in the Spygate and Deflategate scandals.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame released a statement this week defending its selection process while acknowledging the public backlash.
Belichick, who is now the head coach at the University of North Carolina, won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and owns 333 career victories, second only to Don Shula in NFL history.
