The sheriff's department alleges that Richardson was "dangerously tailgating and travelling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists."

Richardson was released on a $500 bond on Thursday and has a court date of Feb. 26, the Orange County Corrections Department tells PEOPLE.

PEOPLE has reached out to the USA Track and Field (USATF) and Richardson's representative for comment.

The incident comes six months after Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault after a verbal altercation with her boyfriend, fellow runner Christian Coleman, allegedly turned physical.

The pair was traveling at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport in Seattle on Sunday, July 27, 2025, when the arresting officer allegedly witnessed Richardson push Coleman multiple times before he fell into a nearby column, USA Today reported at the time, citing the Seattle Police Department.

Airport security footage allegedly documented Richardson bumping into Coleman as he attempted to walk away from her. She also reportedly threw a pair of headphones at him, the outlet reported.

Coleman refused to press charges and said he "declined to be a victim," according to The New York Times, citing a police report. Richardson later apologized for the incident on social media.

In 2021, Richardson tested positive for THC, which is the chemical in marijuana, during a post-race drug test, giving her a 30-day suspension and ineligibility for the Tokyo Olympics.
