'People look at points, but there's a lot more that goes into playing good basketball, and that's what our team is made up of.'

WINDBER — Sophomore Bryn Prosser poured in a game-high 23 points, while senior Mercy Sechler delivered 22 points to lift Berlin Brothersvalley over Windber 62-28 in a matchup of the top two District 5-2A girls basketball teams, Thursday, Jan. 29.

"We have 11 girls on our team, and they are all super important to us," said Berlin coach Rachel Prosser. "People look at points, but there's a lot more that goes into playing good basketball, and that's what our team is made up of."

Berlin (14-3) erupted to a 13-0 lead before Windber got on the board with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Rylee Baer.

The Mountaineers led 21-5 after one. Sechler had eight points in the frame and Prosser tallied seven.

The defending PIAA 2A champs continued to add on in the second. The Mountaineers closed the quarter on a 13-0 surge for a 46-15 advantage at the break.

"This was a good eye opener for us to see a team of their caliber," Windber coach Chad Manippo said of Berlin. "Give them credit, they are a great team. We have to work on the fundamentals and do the little things more consistently."

Senior Kaylie Gaye paced the Ramblers with 14 points, and Baer added 10.

It's a slate Sechler and company are looking forward to as the Mountaineers hit their stride down the home stretch.

"It's great to see this group coming together," Sechler said. "We have improved a lot on our teamwork this year. We have all been so great together, and our chemistry is just amazing. We are able to communicate, push the ball and that's how we win games. We know what it takes to go to states. We are all working as hard as possible, putting in the work at practice to get back there again."
