West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo admits Lucas Paqueta is irreplaceable, as the Brazilian closes in on a move to Flamengo.
Paqueta’s departure has yet to be officially confirmed, but West Ham have released a statement saying he had “been given permission to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Brazilian club Flamengo”.
Speaking about the transfer, Espirito Santo said: “It’s not official yet. The club have allowed him to travel to do his medical, but like I said I think we found a solution that everybody was aware of and came to a good conclusion.
“Lucas was clear that he wanted to return home and we expect after the medical things to become official. Let’s wait and see.”
Paqueta has played for the club for three-and-a half-years, making 133 appearances for the Hammers.
Expanding on his impact, Santo said: “For me, Lucas is a special player and a special person. He’s a number 10, I’ve told you many times. I think it was not the proper way if you want (how things happened).
“I think everything could be different, but the circumstances are what they are. He wanted to go to Brazil, and there’s an offer.
“Let’s expect the medical and we’ll keep moving, knowing that he’s a special person, a special player and we wish him all the best, all the very best for him.
“You cannot replace Lucas because he’s unique. He’s a number 10 that has special qualities. You cannot find many players like Lucas in the transfer window. You cannot find them. We have to move forward with what we have.”
