LOS ANGELES -- The LA Galaxy officially announced the acquisition of Brazilian forward João Klauss from St. Louis CITY SC on Monday, finalizing a major trade that had been in the works for weeks.

The Galaxy sent $2,375,000 in cash to St. Louis in exchange for Klauss, who will occupy a Designated Player slot for the club. The move was made possible after midfielder Riqui Puig was placed on the Season-Ending Injury List, leaving a roster spot open.

“João has established himself as a fierce competitor and great teammate and we are excited to welcome him to the group,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz. “We look forward to benefitting from the leadership and tenacity he has displayed during his time in MLS as we prepare for the upcoming season."

Klauss, 28, is under contract through the 2026 season. He brings a proven MLS scoring record to Los Angeles, having netted 27 goals in 85 appearances for St. Louis since joining the expansion side in 2022. He notably scored a hat-trick against the Galaxy in a 3-3 draw last June.

The striker also adds valuable international experience, having played in the German, Austrian, and Belgian top flights, as well as in UEFA Europa League and Concacaf Champions Cup matches.

This signing adds to the overhaul for the Galaxy this offseason. Both Kuntz and Vanney said the Galaxy would like to add another attacking player during media availability last week.

Klauss joins a crowded strikers’ room alongside Nascimento and Christian Ramirez under head coach Greg Vanney.

The club recently extended the loan of young forward Matheus Nascimento and signed defender John Nelson to a long-term deal.

The timing of the deal is key as Klauss now has most of the preseason to get acclimated to the club and his new teammates.

The Galaxy’s next preseason match is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31 against D.C. United in closed-door match.
