There has been a lot of talk this month about what the future holds for Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, and it looks like we might finally have an answer.
The situation with those two has been one of the more interesting storylines of this window.
Things picked up earlier in the month when Robertson spoke about his contract winding down. It did not sound like he was ruling anything out.
And then Tottenham’s interest put things in motion. Liverpool were open to letting him go, but only if they could bring in someone first.
Tsimikas seemed like a natural replacement on paper, but that plan now appears to be off the table.
Roma want to keep Kostas Tsimikas from returning to Liverpool
Roma were initially open to the idea of Tsimikas heading back, but the situation has shifted since then. Their latest move for Wolves’ David Moller Wolfe fell through, and they’ve yet to bring anyone else in.
Gianluca Di Marzio now reports that Roma have decided to keep hold of Tsimikas for the remainder of his loan, meaning there will not be any early return for him.
This leaves Liverpool with some decisions to make. Given that Robertson remains under contract until 2026 and has been a key part of Arne Slot’s squad planning, it makes sense for him to stay put for now.
Liverpool’s ownership group FSG are known for being methodical rather than impulsive when it comes to transfers. With just a week left before the window closes, it does not seem likely they will rush into a new signing.
Kostas Tsimikas move stalls Andy Robertson’s exit from Liverpool
The information out of Rome makes it seem pretty clear: both players are set to stay put for now, at least until summer.
David Ornstein supports that view in his latest Transfer DealSheet article for The Athletic, saying talks between Spurs and Liverpool are not moving forward because of how difficult it has been getting Tsimikas back from Italy.
This could work out better for everyone involved. While moving on was always going to happen eventually – partly due to fitness issues – Slot still has plenty of good things left he can get out of Andy before letting him go.
Robertson will likely get his farewell lap around Anfield before finally calling time on what has been a fantastic spell with the club.
