Buffalo Bills interview Nate Scheelhaase for head coaching position

The Buffalo Bills interview yet another young offensive mind for their open head coaching position.

The Buffalo Bills have been busy searching for a new head coach after firing Sean McDermott at the end of the 2025 season. With the Denver Broncos having been eliminated on Sunday, the Bills interviewed their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Davis Webb, for the position.

Now, reports have emerged that Buffalo were to scheduled to interview Nate Scheelhaase, the Los Angeles Rams’ passing game coordinator, for their open head coaching position. The Bills are moving quickly, having just completed the interview with Scheelhaase this evening after he had already interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for the second time today. That meeting with Cleveland was an in-person interview.

Scheelhaase, 35, has spent the last two seasons working under head coach Sean McVay in Los Angeles. He has held the titles of passing game specialist and passing game coordinator during those two seasons. Prior to joining the Rams’ staff, Scheelhaase coached for nine seasons in the NCAA, working with his alma mater, Illinois, from 2015-2017 before moving on to Iowa State from 2018-2023.

While with Illinois, Scheelhaase served in football operations and as running backs coach (2015), as well as a role as an offensive assistant (2016-2017). With Iowa State, he held various titles, including running backs coach (2018, 2021-2022), wide receivers coach (2019-2022), running game coordinator (2021-2022), and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2023).

Scheelhaase played collegiately at Illinois, serving as the starting quarterback from 2010-2013. He completed 63% of his passes for 8,568 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. He ran 614 times for 2,066 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is the Fighting Illinis’ career leader in passing yards, total offensive yards (10,634), and single-season completion percentage (66.74%, achieved during the 2013 season). He is also second in school history in rushing yards by a quarterback.
