Right-handed starting pitcher Dylan Cease is in his second season with the San Diego Padres after debuting for the Chicago White Sox in 2019.
The 29-year-old ace has been one of the most dependable arms in baseball over his seven-year career, and his 151 starts made over the last five seasons, including this year, are the most in baseball.
Cease’s peak performance has him ranked among the best pitchers in MLB, and he has finished in the top five of Cy Young Award voting twice (2022, 2024).
This season, he carries a 4.59 ERA and a 3–10 record for San Diego, yet he has struck out 144 batters in just 113.2 innings, signaling his arsenal remains highly effective.
On Wednesday, it was reported that the Padres would be willing to listen to trade offers on Cease in order to shore up other areas of need.
On Friday, before San Diego’s series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Mike Shildt announced that Michael King is scheduled for a simulated game at Petco Park on Monday, with an August return likely.
Michael King is scheduled for a simulated game at Petco Park on Monday, Mike Shildt said. He threw his first up-and-down bullpen session on Wednesday and reportedly felt good, recovered well.

The Padres acquired King in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade with the New York Yankees before the 2024 season, and he has flourished in San Diego—making Cease an expendable asset.
Over 41 appearances with the Padres, King has compiled a 2.86 ERA, a 17–11 record, and 265 strikeouts over 229.1 innings.
He has been on the 15-day injured list since May 25 due to right shoulder inflammation resulting from a pinched nerve.
