Four former Tar Heels will take the field in Super Bowl LX, with Drake Maye making history as UNC’s first starting quarterback.
The NFL season is winding down as there is just one game left, after the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks punched their tickets to Super Bowl LX. As we await the big game two weeks from now, there will be a lot of storylines for both sides.
But for the University of North Carolina, they will be represented by four players in the game.
Three players are members of the AFC champion New England Patriots, and one plays for the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks.
Here is a look at the Tar Heels who will appear in Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
QB Drake Maye, New England
Maye has guided New England back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2018 season, becoming the first UNC quarterback ever to start under center in the game. In the snowy conference title matchup against the Denver Broncos, his passing numbers were modest — 10-for-21 for 86 yards — but he made up for it with his legs, rushing 10 times for 65 yards and accounting for the Patriots’ lone touchdown on a 6-yard keeper with 2:10 left in the second quarter.
Across the regular season, Maye has been one of the league’s most productive signal-callers, throwing for 4,394 yards with 31 touchdowns against eight interceptions, and adding 103 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground. That combination of efficiency, volume and winning has firmly placed him among the frontrunners for the NFL Most Valuable Player award.
WR Mack Hollins, New England Patriots
Hollins is making his second trip to the Super Bowl after being part of the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles team that defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
In the AFC Championship Game, he had two catches for 51 yards. Hollins finished the regular season with 46 receptions for 550 yards and two touchdowns.
LB Amari Joiner, New England Patriots
Joiner joins his former UNC teammate Maye in reaching the Super Bowl, but he will not play, as he is on New England’s practice squad. He signed with the Patriots on Dec. 17, 2025.
LB Chazz Surratt, Seattle Seahawks
The only Seahawks representative from UNC, Surratt, has primarily been used on special teams, logging just seven defensive snaps over 11 games this season. He is currently on the reserve/injured list.
