We're now less than a week from the MLB Trade Deadline and one of the biggest potential targets for the Milwaukee Brewers is now off the market. Ryan McMahon has been traded from the Colorado Rockies to the New York Yankees for two prospects.
The Yankees have been rumored to be the hottest team after Diamondbacks slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez. With their motivation and resources, they seemed to be the favorite to get Suarez. Now, with McMahon, they are no longer in the market for Suarez.
While the Yankees are far from the only team that were in the Suarez sweepstakes, one less team being in means the Brewers chances to make that move just went up.
What McMahon to Yankees Means for Suarez Trade Market
The fact that the team that was most hard after Suarez pivoted a different direction six days before the Deadline screams that Arizona's price tag on Suarez was far too high. If the price is too high for a franchise that historically is willing to pay whatever it takes to get what they want, then it's going to be too high for everyone else most likely.
An exorbitant price tag is somewhat to be expected as the Diamondbacks have what everyone wants right now and they can put a high price on him. There are still a number of teams who are going to be interested in Suarez, but they're likely waiting for that price tag to come down while keeping an eye on other options.
The Yankees exiting the third base market with McMahon will lessen the leverage that Arizona has in trade negotiations as there's one less team involved in the bidding and it's the team with the deepest pockets.
It wouldn't surprise me if Suarez talks come down to the wire of the Trade Deadline and he doesn't move until the final day. Teams are going to try to wait out Arizona and get that price tag down because ultimately they are going to want to take advantage of their opportunity and get something back rather than hold him.
What does this mean for the Brewers?
The Brewers have the patience and ability to be one of those teams that can wait out the Trade Deadline and see if that price tag for Suarez falls into something more reasonable. They are not a team that typically overpays.
However, the biggest team that could motivate the Brewers to pay up for Suarez was not the Yankees, it was the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are still in play as a possibility and this McMahon trade also boosts the chances for the Cubs.
If the Cubs also go elsewhere at third base, then the Brewers might have less to worry about. That could also mean that price tag is remaining way too high. Deadlines cause action, and someone is going to blink first. Either the Brewers or another suitor blinks and pays that high price tag for Suarez or the Diamondbacks will blink and drop their price to something reasonable.
Remember, Suarez is a rental. For just two months of team control, there's only so much a team like the Brewers will be willing to give up.
