Vote for Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week for Jan. 18-24

Here are the Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of Jan. 18-24.

The week of Jan. 18-24 was full of Iowa high school sports action featuring teams and athletes from the Ames area.

The Ames boys wrestling team competed at the Ed Winger Invitational in Urbandale on Jan. 24. The Class 4A No. 6 Ames boys basketball team defeated Norwalk by a 67-61 score on Jan. 20 at Ames, and the Ames boys swimming team won the Iowa Alliance Conference meet on Jan. 24 at the Dan Flannery Pool in Ames.

The 3A No. 1 Ballard boys basketball team was also in action, scoring a 79-33 win over Boone on Jan. 20 in Huxley. Nevada also won a big rivalry game over Roland-Story, 37-31, on Jan. 20 at Nevada.

The Gilbert, Collins-Maxwell and Colo-NESCO boys basketball teams were also in action.

There were several impressive individual outings by male high school athletes from the Ames area during the week.

Braxton Winkey, Ames

Ames boys wrestler Braxton Winkey takes down Marshalltown’s Anthony Chavez during their 157-pound match in a dual meet on Dec. 4, 2025, at the Harrison Barnes Gymnasium in Ames, Iowa.

Winkey placed first at 150 pounds during the Ed Winger Invitational boys wrestling tournament on Jan. 24 in Urbandale.

Winkey, ranked No. 3 at 150 in 3A by IAwrestle.com, went 4-0 to improve to 28-3 on the season. He scored three technical falls then defeated 3A No. 9 Jayden Zachary of Dowling Catholic in the finals by a 10-4 decision.

Damian Hoover, Nevada

Hoover picked up two victories by fall for the Nevada boys wrestling team during a quadrangular dual against Baxter, Knoxville and South Hamilton on Jan. 20 at Maxwell.

Hoover received a forfeit against Baxter and then he pinned Knoxville's Jaden Alexander and South Hamilton's Wyatt Morris.

Parker Miller, Ballard

Miller had an excellent all-around game for the 3A No. 1 Ballard boys basketball team during its 79-33 rout of Boone on Jan. 20 at Huxley.

Miller made 4 of 6 field goals and scored eight points. He also dished out seven assists and came up with six steals and two rebounds.

Billy Terrones, Gilbert

Terrones did a great job running the attack for the Gilbert boys basketball team during a 57-48 victory over North Polk on Jan. 20 at Gilbert.

Terrones converted 4 of 6 field goals and scored 12 points. He also dished out seven assists with no turnovers and pulled down four rebounds.

Brady Handsaker, Colo-NESCO

Handsaker had an excellent showing for the Colo-NESCO boys basketball team during a thrilling 43-42 victory over GMG on Jan. 20 at Colo.

Handsaker went for 20 points after making 6 of 9 field goals, including 1 of 2 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 free throws. He also pulled down 10 rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked three shots.
