Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was 13 when he attended Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium as a fan. He returns a decade later after leading New England past Denver.
DENVER - Drake Maye was 13 years old when he attended his first Super Bowl.
His father Mark took him to Super Bowl 50, a decade ago, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The Carolina Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos that day, but the seed was already planted.
Ten years later, it’s come full circle.
Maye helped lead the Patriots past the Broncos, 10-7, in a blizzard to punch their ticket to Super Bowl 60, coincidentally at Levi’s Stadium.
“Yeah, it’s full circle, you know, my dad, when I was in 7th grade, said if the Panthers made it, we’re gonna go, and, you know, it was, it was heartbreaking,” said Maye, a die-hard Panthers fan as a kid. “They lost to the Broncos, but ... . it was what an experience for a kid at my age who loved football.”
And loved quarterbacks.
“That was Peyton’s last game and what a Hall of Fame career he had,” Maye said following the Patriots AFC Championship win. “So pretty cool to be full circle going back here 10 years later, and, I think it’s just a special moment for this whole team, and we’re just gonna enjoy it tonight.
“And, head back. We have 2 weeks, so we got some work to do.”
Under tough conditions, with snow falling throughout the second half, Maye had to rely on his legs to get the job done.
He made a pivotal first down late in the game with a 7-yard run. He rushed 10 times for 65, and scored the Patriots lone touchdown in the first half.
