In the biggest game of his career, Sam Darnold had his best performance as a Seahawk, and now he’s in the Super Bowl.
The Seattle Seahawks are in the Super Bowl, and while the top-ranked defense made a late stand to preserve a slender lead, this game was won by the Seahawks offense and the superb quarterback display by Sam Darnold.
After all of the critics and skeptics of Darnold following last season’s playoff disaster with the Minnesota Vikings, then leading the league in turnovers during the regular season (while still being an extremely productive player) in his first season with the Seahawks, the main narrative entering the postseason was whether or not Darnold would fold and become a turnover machine.
Well, despite an oblique injury sustained two weeks ago, Darnold has come through the NFC West gauntlet and committed zero turnovers for his third consecutive start. He just shredded the Rams to the tune of 25/36 for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns, including several timely third-down completions when the Seahawks were in desperate need of sustained drives.
Even if you were a Darnold skeptic at the start of the season, or got worried about some of the turnover issues during the season when the offense had some lulls, you cannot deny that Darnold just pulled off what is by far the finest performance of any Seahawks quarterback in a Conference Championship game. He was almost faultless against a good Rams defense, firing accurate passes in the face of pressure, taking checkdowns when he needed to, and the end result is a Super Bowl appearance.
This was not a banner night for the Seahawks defense, while the run game faded out after a strong start on offense. With the season on the line, Sam Darnold had to go throw-for-throw with Matthew Stafford and that’s exactly what happened.
Darnold deserves his flowers for the night, his season, his career turnaround dating back to his Minnesota days, and now he can cap off his story of being written off by writing back with a Super Bowl victory in two weeks.
And the greatest quarterback in Seahawks franchise history gave a tip of the cap after that performance.
