Omar Marmoush finally got the opportunity to start yesterday for Manchester City against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad. Erling Haaland had needed a rest for some time, and with Marmoush back from international duty, Pep Guardiola took the opportunity to rest his top scorer. The challenge was in front of Marmoush to put in a good performance for his team. The Egyptian international did that as he scored Manchester City’s opening goal in their 2-nil win, and he was lively throughout yesterday’s match.

Omar Marmoush did exactly what Manchester City needed against Wolves at the Etihad.

The opportunity was there for Omar Marmoush to make an impact in an important match for his team. Pep Guardiola’s side needed to pick up three points yesterday after back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Bodø/Glimt. They also needed a win after drawing their past three Premier League matches before yesterday’s win over Wolves. City got the win they needed yesterday, and Omar Marmoush played a key role in his team’s victory.

Omar Marmoush got Manchester City off to the perfect start when he opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish in the 6th minute. Matheus Nunes played in a quality cross into a dangerous position. Marmoush ghosted in and beat the Wolves defender to beat José Sá with a smart volley. It was an intelligent finish by Marmoush and encapsulated what he adds to this Manchester City side. Marmoush’s movement is brilliant, and that stood out in his goal yesterday at the Etihad.

Another side of Omar Marmoush’s performance that stood out yesterday was his work rate. The Egyptian international pressed Wolves when they had possession, and he put himself into duels throughout the game. That was extremely pleasing to see. At times, Marmoush can seem passive with his work out of possession. There was none of that yesterday as Marmoush put in a great all-around display which reminded everyone of the weapon that City have at their disposal in Marmoush.

Pep Guardiola praised Marmoush after his team’s win and he figures to have a big role to play in the coming weeks.

Speaking after his team’s important win over Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday, Pep Guardiola praised the performance of Omar Marmoush. Guardiola also reminded everyone of how crucial the Egyptian international was in his team’s successful bid to secure Champions League football last season. Speaking on Omar Marmoush, Pep Guardiola said: “Last season when he arrived for three months he was unbelievable; without him it would not be possible to qualify for the Champions League and reach the FA Cup final. He’s a special player, not old ,not young but he has margin to improve. His dynamic energy and runs are really good.”

I see him more as a striker not a proper winger. He’s a guy for transition actions. I am so happy for him. He arrived clean after AFCON, and I am so pleased for him.

Omar Marmoush has almost become Manchester City’s forgotten man this season. A knee injury and his participation at AFCON have limited his opportunities to make an impact for Manchester City this season. Marmoush played a key role in his team’s win yesterday, which will do his confidence the world of good. Also, Marmoush has the potential to be a key player in more ways than one for Pep Guardiola’s side across the back end of this season.
