A first-timer and a familiar face were crowned 6A competitive cheer state champs at UVU on Friday night.

The Weber Warrriors denied Westlake a co-ed 3-peat with a strong showing in all three categories to secure the state title, their first in the four years since cheer became a sanctioned sport by the UHSAA.

Corner Canyon, meanwhile, returned to the top of the 6A all-girl division, dethroning defending champ Bingham for its third title in the past three seasons.

The Chargers finished first in the Cheer and Show categories and third in the Dance category en route to the title. The 6A runners-up were Davis, which won the Dance category and finished second in Cheer and Show.

Bingham rounded out the top three in 6A.

“We are always a team that pushes the boundaries and strives to set the standard of cheerleading not just locally but nationally. 6A is so competitive, and so it’s great to see the hard work that these kids put in pay off and for them to come out on top,” said Corner Canyon coach Whitney Lunt.

“Our kids this year have been so coachable and have truly bought in to mastering these new skills and to what it means to be a Corner Canyon cheerleader and a true team. We are so incredibly proud to call them ours.”

Corner Canyon’s athletes are: Evelyn Archer, Izzy Bagley, Nora Balderson, Atiya Blankenship, Annie Boogaard, Abbi Brady, Brynley Davis, Reese Dickamore, Paisley Draper, Taelyn Dykman, Jane Fisher, Roxy Furstenau, Ryan Germer, Kayla Harmer, Liz Hobbs, Audrey Kenworthy, Shaye Mason, Mylie Matthews, Kate Nelson, Charlee Noorda, Nell Osterhout, Dani Pearce, Berkley Peay, Natalie Rasmussen, Payton Reese, Breklyn Richards, Sophie Seely, Claire Sexton, Blakely Smith, Adri Tebbs, Sophie Theler, Juliet Strong, Ellie Walton, Sophie Wilson, Caitlin Yamamoto and Julia Zeltser.

For Weber, patience and dedication paid off in a big way this season.

Two years ago Weber finished in fourth place and last year finished third, while both years it watched Westlake celebrate back-to-back state championships.

Fast forward to this season and the Warriors made huge strides as a program, and this time it was everyone else watching them celebrate.

“This one was so special because we didn’t just work on skills day and night—we learned how to work together, trust each other and truly become a family. People often say that cheerleading is ‘just cheerleading,’ but it is so much more than that," said Weber coach Emma Heiner.

Weber finished first in the Show category, second in Cheer and third in Dance.

Westlake finished first in the Dance and Cheer categories to finish as 6A co-ed runner-up. Farmington rounded out the top three.

“These kids dedicate countless hours supporting their school, their community and each other, all while being in the middle of their own season. We are the first team in the morning and usually the last one out. It means everything that we were able to do this — bring it home for our community and bring it home for each other," said Heiner. “I couldn’t be prouder of these kids. I truly believe they deserve the world. As we like to say, it’s the Weber Way.’”

Weber’s team members are: Makenna Aaredema, Nixen Alvord, Eva Berni, Lilly Berrett, Harper Close, Madison Egan, Taylor Gaines, Avery Garner, Ava Greenwood, Averly Hacking, Isabel Hadlock, Skylee Hammer, Ella Hill, Kate Humphreys, Cambri Jenks, Hadlee Jensen, Peyton Johnston, Sophie Jorgensen, Olivia Kennedy, Brie Larsen, Nia Magee, Kiya Malan, Kyler Olson, Belle Owens, Brecklyn Parkinson, Tess Pendergast, Lauren Powell, Emmi Price, Laini Rackham, Sami Roylance, Owen Talbot, Lily Wasden, Mercy Willden, Addison Yantes and Mykah Yantes.
