One Free Agent the Detroit Lions Cannot Afford to Lose in 2026

Pro Football Focus says the Detroit Lions cannot afford to lose Avonte Maddox in free agency. Here’s why his versatility and production make him a key piece of the 2026 roster.

Pro Football Focus recently published an article titled “One 2026 free agent that every NFL team can’t afford to lose,” and for the Detroit Lions, the choice was clear. According to PFF analyst Bradley Locker, that player is veteran defensive back Avonte Maddox.

After an injury-plagued 2025 season that saw Detroit’s secondary stretched thin, Maddox quietly emerged as one of the team’s most valuable depth pieces. Signed to provide experience and flexibility, the former Philadelphia Eagles standout ended up playing a critical role when starters Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch missed time.

Maddox, who transitioned back to a primary safety role for the first time since 2018, logged 342 defensive snaps and posted a strong 79.1 overall PFF grade, including 75.0-plus marks in both coverage and run defense. While his season included some variance, three games above an 83.0 grade and two below 42.0, the overall body of work showed a player who could be trusted in multiple roles and situations.

Locker noted that with Branch recovering from a late-season Achilles tear and Joseph still working back from injury, Maddox’s presence could be even more important in 2026. His ability to play both corner and safety, combined with his veteran awareness, makes him the type of versatile defender Brad Holmes has consistently valued for roster stability.

At 29 years old and coming off a productive one-year stint in Detroit, Maddox may not generate national headlines in free agency, but internally, his value is obvious. The Lions’ defensive depth was tested in 2025, and players who can step in without a drop-off are rare commodities.

According to Pro Football Focus, losing Avonte Maddox would leave a much bigger hole than fans might realize, and that’s why he’s being labeled the one 2026 free agent the Detroit Lions simply cannot afford to let walk.
