Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Candidate: Davis Webb

Previewing Las Vegas Raiders coaching finalist Davis Webb

A report from Jordan Schultz on Wednesday indicated that the Las Vegas Raiders are looking for an “offensive minded” coach to pair with likely first overall selection Fernando Mendoza.

Additionally, Schultz went on to mention the top three candidates seem to be Klint Kubiak, Davis Webb, and Jesse Minter. While Minter is a defensive minded coach, he can likely bring in a strong offensive minded coach from his connections with former Ravens and Michigan staffers. Additionally, the consensus around the NFL right now is the Raiders are more than willing to wait till after this weekend’s conference championships and if needed, the Super Bowl to hire a head coach. Lets take a look at the Raiders three reported finalists, their potential coaching staffs, and much more:

Experience

Just 30 years old, well 31 on January 22nd Webb has spent nearly 75% of his life playing or coaching. Webb originally started his career with Texas Tech playing quarterback under Patrick Mahomes and Kliff Kingsbury before transferring to Cal in 2016 while resulting in a 3rd round selection in 2017. After spending 2017-2022 with the Giants, Jets, and Bills as a quarterback Webb has seen his rise to the headlines quickly. The Broncos and Sean Payton hired Webb as their QB coach in 2023 where he served till 2024 before being added the pass game coordinator role in 2025 along with their QB coach in 2025. Webb is young, and his experience is fairly low but he’s been endorsed by Brian Daboll, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Sean Payton, Steve Sarkisian, Kliff Kingsbury, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, and others as a top offensive minded coach and someone who can shock as a head coach. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlingher have notably turned down other teams to stay under Davis Webb and former head coach Kliff Kingsbury stated “if I had a son playing quarterback, I’d want him to play for Davis [Webb]”.

Denver Broncos (2023-2024)

Webb’s first season in 2023 saw veteran Russell Wilson post a 66% completion rate, 3070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions while leading the NFL in 4th quarter comebacks all after a 60%, 3524 yards, 16 touchdown, and 11 interception season in 2022. Wilson flashed and despite his hardships with Sean Payton did show a strong rebound year to then go on and find other jobs with the Steelers and Giants. Additionally, in 2023 Jarrett Stidham logged a 61% completion, 496 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception. 2024 was the most notable for Davis Webb, and the main reason his name has started to pop onto the map. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix started all 17 games posting a 66% completion rate, 3775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while also adding 92 rushing attempts, 430 yards, and four touchdowns. Nix also posted a 3.7% big time throw rate and just a 1.8% turnover worthy play rate while also having an elite adjusted completion rate of 77%. Nix had an elite 13.4% pressure to sack rate and a 2.98 time to throw rate all of which are high marks for any quarterback, especially a rookie.

Denver Broncos (2025)

After a strong season as the Broncos QB coach, Webb was promoted and saw even higher success in 2025. Bo Nix logged a 63% completion rate, 4210 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while also raising his big time throw rate to 5%, which was 2nd in the NFL and despite his turnover worthy play rate rising it still sat a strong 2.7%. Nix improved his time to throw to 2.83 seconds and dropped his pressure to sack rate to 9.5% which was the best in the NFL. The Broncos ranked 10th in passing yards/game, 14th in net yards/attempt, 10th in first downs, 8th in EPA, 7th in DVOA, 2nd in 4th quarter comebacks, 1st in game winning drives, and 9th in yards/game. Additionally, the Broncos ranked 10th in 3rd down conversion rate, 12th in 4th down conversion rate, and 4th in net yards on 3rd and 4th down.

Philosophy:

Webb has little experience as a true offensive playcaller which limits the ability to identify his true identity but his experience with Sean Payton likely puts him towards the traditional west coast offense with an emphasis on vertical passing attacks, which saw an uptick when Webb took over pass game coordinator duties. The Broncos and Payton saw an increase in zone blocking the last two seasons but have also relied heavily on gap assignments as well, something that Payton has done in his career mixing blocking assignments. Webb has seen a large part of his emphasis focus on vertical passing concepts and also saw the Broncos uptick RPO usage to roughly 12% this season, something Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza has succeeded with. Webb has notably been focused on long term building and culture developments as seen by his rooms with the Broncos. It’s truly unknown what Webb could bring but an expected high movement, moving pocket, RPO reliant West Coast style offense is likely to make it’s way to Las Vegas if Webb is hired.

Potential Assistant Coaches

Webb hasn’t had time to develop his coaching tree but reported links to Kliff Kingsbury and Brian Daboll as his offensive coordinator have floated and both match with what Webb’s offense is similar to. Kingsbury, who parted ways with the Washington Commanders this off-season was Webb’s head coach at Texas Tech and would bring a diverse offense to pair with Webb focusing on more vertical passing concepts to pair with the moving West Coast offense Webb has. Former Giants head coach Brian Daboll has spoke highly of Webb, but he’s likely to end up in Buffalo or Tennessee. A large swing could be Broncos OL coach and assistant head coach Zach Strief who spent 2006-2017 in the NFL starting 158 games has solely worked under Sean Payton so a switch could be tough to see though in his three seasons as OL coach they have ranked 11th, 5th, and 1st and would be a massive swing for Webb to bring on as a potential OL coach or even OC. Additionally, former NFL player Austin King who spent time with the Raiders as their TE coach in 2021 (Darren Waller logged 55 receptions, 665 yards, and 2 TD) could return in an identical role. Eagles DB coach Christian Parker spent time in Denver from 2023-2024 and has a strong relationship with Webb and is viewed as a top defensive coordinator candidate. A large part for Webb would be bringing in proven talent to mix with young coaches to develop a quality culture.

Players to Watch, Connections:

The majority of the Broncos free agents are defensive additions but tight end Adam Trautman could be a name to watch for depth in Las Vegas along with runningback JK Dobbins. Defensively, the Broncos are losing linebacker Alex Singleton, Justin Strnad, and defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers who all should be targets for Las Vegas. While not a notable name, quarterback Sam Ehlinger would almost be a guaranteed signing as a backup quarterback option for Las Vegas due to his connections with Webb despite being just 2 years younger.
